FAQ

Braces FAQ

How long will I need to wear braces?

The average treatment time ranges from 18 to 24 months, but this can vary depending on your individual needs. Factors like age, the severity of your case, and how well you follow instructions all play a role.

Do braces hurt?

Braces don’t hurt when they are first placed, but you may experience soreness or discomfort for a few days afterward or after adjustments. This is normal and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and saltwater rinses.

How often will I need to come in for appointments?

Most patients are scheduled for adjustments every 4 to 6 weeks. These visits allow Dr. Nicholson to monitor progress and make necessary changes to your treatment plan.

Can I still play sports or musical instruments with braces?

Yes! You can continue most activities, but we recommend wearing a mouthguard during sports to protect your braces and teeth. Some wind or brass instrument players may need a short adjustment period.

What foods should I avoid while wearing braces?

To prevent damage to your braces, avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods such as gum, caramel, popcorn, ice, and whole apples or carrots (unless cut into small pieces).

What should I do if a bracket or wire comes loose?

If a bracket or wire becomes loose or broken, call our office at (206) 722-5000. We’ll guide you on what to do and schedule a repair appointment. In the meantime, orthodontic wax can help reduce irritation.

How do I brush and floss with braces?

Brush after every meal using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Flossing should be done at least once a day using a floss threader or orthodontic flosser. An interdental brush or water flosser can also help clean hard-to-reach areas.

Will I need to wear a retainer after my braces come off?

Yes, retainers are essential to maintaining your results. Dr. Nicholson will give you specific instructions on how often to wear your retainer to keep your smile straight for years to come.

Are there alternatives to metal braces?

Yes! Seattle Braces offers clear braces for a more discreet look. At your consultation, Dr. Nicholson will help determine which orthodontic treatment is best for your smile and lifestyle.

What age is best to get braces?

While braces can be effective at almost any age, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at the first sign of orthodontic problems or no later than age 7. However, many adults also benefit from orthodontic treatment.
